Pattern language

The children's version of the Freyr sweater. The colorwork is unusual for a lopapeysa — it runs over the whole sweater rather than the yoke alone, and the shaping is raglan rather than the circular yoke of the traditional Icelandic sweater. There is always something happening, which makes it an enjoyable knit, and it takes well to a wide range of color combinations. The stranded fabric makes it especially warm.

Sizes  2–14 years, 7 sizes
Gauge  18 sts and 24 rounds = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in)
Yarn  Léttlopi or similar (worsted weight)   ·  Difficulty  3 of 5

The pattern includes detailed explanations, a chart and links to video tutorials.

How it is worked

Worked from the bottom up. The body and the sleeves are worked in the round and joined on one needle at the armholes, and the yoke is then shaped with raglan decreases.

Since we all knit a little differently, no yarn quantity can be exact.

Materials, tools and techniques

Yarn Álafoss Léttlopi, or any yarn that knits to gauge. We recommend using natural fibers.
Needles 3.5 mm [US 4] and 4.5 mm [US 7] circular and double-pointed needles, or the size that gives you the right gauge — the circular length depends on the size of the sweater. One long circular in each size is enough if you prefer the magic loop technique.
Notions Stitch markers, including a beginning-of-round marker. Darning needle, measuring tape and scissors.
Techniques used Casting on, knitting and purling, binding off. Increases to the right and left, and decreases worked by knitting three stitches together. Stranded colorwork worked from a chart.
