Pattern language

Freyr is an unconventional lopapeysa, and one that takes well to all kinds of color combinations. The colorwork runs over the whole sweater rather than the yoke alone, which makes it thick and especially warm, and the sweater is shaped with raglan decreases instead of a circular yoke. The neckline sits lower at the front so the sweater sits well. Men's sizes.

Sizes  1–6, 6 sizes, sweater circumference from 93 cm / 36½ in to 127 cm/ 50 in
Gauge  12 sts and 16 rounds in pattern = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in)
Yarn  Álafoss Lopi or similar (bulky)  ·  Difficulty  3–4 of 5

The pattern includes detailed explanations, a chart and links to video tutorials.

How it is worked

Worked from the bottom up. The body and the sleeves are worked in the round and joined on one needle at the armholes, and the yoke is then shaped with raglan decreases. The front neck is shaped with short rows.

Choose a size from the wearer's chest measurement, or from the widest part of the torso. We'd recommend allowing plenty of ease — at least 10 cm / 4 in — as the colorwork makes a dense fabric.

A full measurement chart is given in the pattern.

Since we all knit a little differently, no yarn quantity can be exact.

Materials, tools and techniques

Yarn Álafoss Lopi, or any yarn that knits to gauge.
Needles 4.5 mm [US 7] and 7 mm [US 10½] circular needles in 40, 60 and 80 cm, and 4.5 mm [US 7] double-pointed needles for the ribbing, or the size that gives you the right gauge — one long circular in each size is enough if you prefer the magic loop technique.
Notions Stitch markers, including a beginning-of-round marker. Darning needle, measuring tape and scissors.
Techniques used Casting on, knitting and purling, binding off. Picking up stitches to knit. Increases to the right and left, and decreases worked by knitting three stitches together. Stranded colorwork worked from a chart.
